As a homeowner, you want to make sure you’re doing whatever you can and taking the proper precautions to avoid any serious—and costly—damage to your house. And while this certainly included being diligent about turning off electrical appliances and lights before you leave the house to slash any risk of a fire and not starting the washing machine or dishwasher if you’re not going to be home while it’s running, it’s quite rare that incidents like these happen.

Instead, there are other things that you’re doing—or not doing—that really can ruin your house. The worst of all is that you aren’t even aware you’re making them. In most cases, these mistakes can lead to serious repairs in the long run.
