1. Pitcher Plant

The pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant native to the Philippines. It consumes crawling and flying insects using its oblong pitfall traps that loosely hang from tendrils attached to its green leaves.

The underside of the trap’s lid is where the nectar is secreted to attract creepy crawlies. In other words, insects slip into the pitcher, downing the liquid contained within. Bugs are then digested by enzymes, which provide valuable nutrients to the plant.

Giving your pitcher plant plenty of humidity, warmth, and sunlight will keep it happy. Because this unusual plant is adapted to catch the nutrients it needs, use light soil consisting of half perlite and half sphagnum moss. Also, make sure you keep the soil consistently moist.

When kept indoors over the winter, feed your pitcher plant each month with dried blood worms, fish flood flakes, or live crickets until springtime.
