4. Not having enough contrast

 

Using contrast can be a smart way to highlight specific areas or objects in your house without making it look dull and flat. Imagine a white object’s impact if placed against a dark or light background.

The interesting thing about contrast in design is that it doesn’t only refer to color. Contrast can mean different textures, surfaces, light, or volume. You can play around with it as much as you like. Just make sure not to introduce too many elements. If everything is highlighted, a room will become overwhelming.

Some examples of contrast may be light vs. dark, shiny vs. matte, or rough vs. smooth. Objects can have more than one aspect that makes them stand out in the background. For example, a plant can add a subtitle dimension in volume, texture, and color.

The walls of a house are the blank canvas on which we build the concept of our home design. Many choose white walls—clean and light. You may think nothing can go wrong with white. But think again. Incorporating some color into your painting can make a huge difference and easily save space from dullness.
