5. Bleeding heart

A gorgeous perennial plant with stunning foliage and dangling, heart-shaped blooms in pink or white, bleeding hearts do best in lightly shaded locations and cooler climates. These nectar-rich plants grow 24 to 36 inches tall, and you can easily divide them for transplanting as they lengthen.

You may see the foliage turning yellow and dying, but don’t worry; the plants reliably return each spring. The bleeding heart plants like moist soil, but it must be well-drained to prevent root rot. Their flowers are pretty delicate and require protection from strong winds. Therefore, the best place to plant these nectar-rich plants is in an area with a windbreak as well as somewhere with some sun protection.
