5 Household Items You Need to Replace ASAP

Did you know that these household items need to be replaced more often?

Taking care of your home the proper way is not a cheap task, and as a result, people avoid getting fully involved in this. Yeah, sure, you try to keep things as clean as possible, and you will repair the things that get broken, but most of the time that was it.

Doing this is excellent, but there are some household items you need to replace right now, and what’s surprising is that we are not about to talk about the expensive stuff. No, no; these items are basic things you’re using daily, and replacing them can make a huge difference.

Since they tend to wear out faster compared to other items, you have to be careful and keep an eye on them. Read on and discover what you’ve been doing wrong all this time and learn how to take better care of your home!

Scrub brushes

If you were to think about reliable household items, we are sure that the scrub brush made it into your list. It’s impossible to not think that this item is useful because you use it for so many cleaning tasks. From floors to dishes (obviously, using different brushes), you use the scrub brush every time you have to clean something that needs more than the casual wipe down.

Unlike sponges, which tend to keep bacteria stuck to them due to their porous texture, scrub brushes are more resistant to germs. However, this durability doesn’t make them immortal. The more you use these household items, the faster they will break down, and if you want your scrub brush to be efficient, you also want its bristles to be as intact as possible.

When the bristles begin to wear out, bend, or fall out completely, you know it’s the perfect time to get a new brush. Why? The old brush is not able anymore to clean properly, and you will need to put in more effort, and in the end, the results won’t be what you were expecting.

According to experts, you should replace your brushes every six months, and in this way, you can be sure they are always in top condition.

Water filters

These household items are essential when you want to have the best water to drink. Whether you have filters that are part of a whole-house filtration system or you simply choose a water filter pitcher, you have to change these filters from time to time to make sure the quality of your water remains the same. Their role is to remove sediment, bacteria, and other impurities from your water, so you want them to work properly.

If you have whole-house water filters, you need to know that there are two main components: pre-filters and post-filters. Pre-filters are the first line of defense, and they are the ones that catch the larger particles, such as dirt, rust, and debris. Then there are the post-filters, which are specialized at removing microscopic impurities and ensuring your water is sparkling clean.

Pre-filters need to be replaced every three to nine months, and post-filters need to be replaced less often, only once per year.

If you have a water filter pitcher, you will need to change it every month, and if you rely on the refrigerator water filters, make sure you change them every six months.

Mop heads

Of all household items, mop heads are for sure part of your cleaning arsenal. So, if you want to have a clean home, you need to take care of them. Over time, they collect dirt, grime, and bacteria, even if you wash them after every use. This means there is not much to do, and at some point, you’ll need to change them.

For example, sponge mop heads have the shortest lifespan because they are so good at absorbing liquids that they are more prone to holding on to odors and bacteria compared to other mop head options. As a result, you’ll need to replace them more often, more exactly every two to six months, or as soon as they start to smell bad or change color.

A more durable option is cotton mop heads, and expert cleaners say that these mops can last up to 50 washes. This is about one year of use. However, they can start to fray or lose their effectiveness sooner if used frequently on rough surfaces.

Then we have the microfiber mop heads, and they are the option that lasts the most, about 200 to 500 washes. This means you can have them for a couple of years, which means they are a long-term and cost-effective solution.

Sponges

You are using them every single day, especially in your kitchen. Sponges are indispensable, but more importantly, they can be one of the dirtiest household items. Their very porous structure makes them the perfect environment to trap warmth, moisture, and food particles. This is the perfect home for bacteria and germs.

Yeah, it’s true that sponges don’t come with an expiration date, but this doesn’t mean that you don’t need to change them. Bacteria on sponges can grow rapidly and potentially make you sick.

If you want to make your sponges last longer, you can try to sanitize them thoroughly and then microwave them for one minute or run them through the dishwasher every few days. These methods will kill some of the bacteria but don’t sterilize the sponge completely.

Not sure when you should replace these household items? A good rule of thumb you can follow is to replace them every two weeks. If the sponge starts to smell even quicker, don’t think about it too much and toss it into the trash on the spot.

Microfiber sponges are a more sustainable alternative since they last longer and are less likely to harbor bacteria. Even so, they require regular cleaning and, in the long run, replacement.

Doormats

What is the first thing anyone visiting your home notices? If you said the doormat, good job, because this is the correct answer. This might be just a piece of material you use to clean your shoes, but in reality, this is also the first glimpse someone gets about your personality.

Unfortunately, these household items don’t get all the attention they need. Doormats are constantly exposed to weather, dirt, and heavy foot traffic, and this can wear them faster than most of us realize.

The bristles wear off and fall, worn spots appear, and they get flattened out. These things happen after a while and the effectiveness of your doormat declines. A doormat that no longer serves its purpose will bring debris into your home, and we know very well that this is not what you’re trying to do.

Try to replace your doormat every six months. But if you live in a place where it rains a lot and there is mud everywhere, you can consider changing your doormat even more often. Cleaning your doormat regularly can extend its lifetime, but when you start to notice significant signs of wear, it’s time to swap it out.
