8. Butterfly Bush

The butterfly bush (Buddleja spp.) is one of the worst invasive plants in the Pacific Northwest, where growing conditions have many things in common with its native habitat. It’s also an invasive issue in areas of the Southeast.

People who live in areas colder than zone 6 don’t have to worry too much when it comes to growing butterfly bushes in their gardens, as the plant dies back to the ground each winter. However, if you live in an area where this plant thrives, consider growing a non-invasive alternative such as butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). It also has flowers that bloom in summer, and yes, they attract butterflies.

As its name suggests, the butterfly bush attracts many pollinators, but to humans, the plant doesn’t release the most pleasant odor.
