3. Begonia

Scientific Name: Begonia

  • Plant Type: Annual or Warm Climate Perennial
  • Plant Size: Around 1 foot
  • Geographic Origin: Central America and Mexico
  • Plant Zone: 10-11
  • Sun Exposure: Partial shade to deep shade

These gorgeous flowers bloom for a long time and come in white, red, pink, or multicolored. Their leaves and stems are thick and succulent-like. They can be grown both indoors (in indirect, bright light) or outdoors (in the shade).

They cannot survive at temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They also require well-drained, moist soil and tend to grow in a rounded shape. Here’s one detail you may want to know if you decide to grow begonia in your garden: the roots are toxic while the leaves and flowers can cause vomiting in dogs, cats, and horses.

Begonias make excellent houseplants, and there are different varieties to choose from for those who want a wide color selection.
