10 Stunning Outdoor Plants That Also Offer Privacy

Azalea Flowers

Azalea shrubs are outdoor plants with purple, orange-pink, pink, or simple white flowers. The compact shrub can be three or four feet tall and wide, making it perfect for edging your paths.

It may not grow as tall as some other plants on our list, but it’s perfect for privacy plants in planter boxes and not directly planted in yard soil. Plant them in more oversized planters and put them side by side for a more concealed yard to enjoy the beautiful flowers.

While some azaleas are petite, Southern Indica hybrids such as ‘Formosa’ can grow as big as a bus. A short picket fence in front will tame the azalea just a bit while also framing the blossoms during the week when the shrub is in bloom.

You can create the same effect with other vigorous spring-flowering shrubs such as forsythias, spiraeas, loropetalums, mock oranges, flowering quinces, and weigelas.

As a lifetime gardener with an acre of gardens, I still do have one neighbor who is nasty. He’s upwind, and sends me weed seeds from his riverbank he rarely tends to. Screens would be nice to keep out the seeds, if they could.
You do not list zones. You do not always list normal heights. You do not always list sun/pt shade/shade. That pic of ‘jack frost privet’ shows not white margins. Bamboo is not invasive? HA!! Seen it before, especially in warmer zones. I realize you had only so much room, but straightforward listing of the important stuff is so much more helpful than amusing literature.

    Thanks!!

Privet is dangerous to horses. Bamboo is extremely invasive. What about fig trees or magnolias?
