7. Euphorbia Tirucalli

When looking at it, it becomes pretty clear why Euphorbia tirucalli is commonly known as the pencil tree. Originally, this unusual plant comes from the eastern and southern regions of Africa, and nowadays—thanks to its low maintenance—it’s very popular as an indoor plant. Well, it’s not as popular as the snake plant or spider plant, but it’s still pretty famous for its distinct shape.

Indoors, it can grow up to 6 feet tall and 1-3 feet wide. Its pencil-like branches grow upward in a candelabra style and are currently becoming a trend for contemporary styling. Young branches are smooth, cylindrical, and green, but with age, they can turn rough and gray like tree bark.

Although commonly known as pencil cactus, this unusual plant isn’t actually a member of the cactus family. It’s very low-maintenance and doesn’t usually have issues with diseases or pests. As a rule of thumb, watering this plant is only required a couple of times per month during the warmer months and even less during the winter months.
