You always drink at the same frequency, all the time.

I know it seems a bit confusing, but hear me out: When it comes to watering your plants, it all comes down to the species and various other factors. Here’s how you can tell when and how you should water your plants:

  • During warmer months, the plants have to be more hydrated because the leaves are losing more liquid since there’s more evaporation at the soil level.
  • During periods when there is less rain, you might want to water your plants more often to make up for the lack of water.
  • Strong winds also dry out the plants faster. Plants that are grown in windy places need frequent watering.
  • Some vegetable and fruit plants need more watering during flowering and fruiting periods. For instance, beans, peas, tomatoes, squash plants, cucumbers, and sweet potatoes fall into this category.
  • If the garden substrate is too sandy, you might have to water your plants more frequently because this type of soil barely holds water.
  • When plants are in pots, the frequency of watering depends on the size of the container. And the smaller the container, the more frequently you’ll have to water the plant.
  • On the same note, root-bound container plants need more watering.
