Not Enough Space For Garbage AND Recycling?
Waste management is often something that’s overlooked when planning out a kitchen. But the room needs to function correctly. After you’re done chopping up food, how far away from you are your bins?
How To Solve This: The specific bin setup will depend on your particular needs. But generally, a larger bin is needed for general trash. And that should be supplemented with a few separate, smaller bins or containers for various types of recycling.
If your space allows it, an ideal layout is to install a pull-out in a cabinet to the left of the sink with some separate bins for general trash and recycling. Ideally, the dishwasher should be positioned to the right of the sink.
What about UNDER the sink for trash and recycling? I designed kitchens for years, and the space under the sink is not desirable for food or appliance storage, so use it for trash and garbage. As usual, my sink has two doors beneath it. I mounted a bin to the inside of one door to hold a trash bag, and a pull-out bin behind the other door for recycling.
