Ferns

Well, frothy-looking ferns are much sturdier than they seem, as they pop up again no matter what. The toughest winters can’t scare these babies, which is admirable. They like moist ground, but they’re also fairly drought-tolerant once they get used to it.

Hellebore

These beautiful, evergreen plants produce truly unusual, long-lasting blooms in late winter and, in some cases, very early spring. You could pick a spot and stick to it, but make sure you don’t move them. They hate being moved once established.

Lamium

With silvery, variegated foliage and yellow, pink, and purple blooms, Lamium is the ideal addition to a shaded landscape. This plant is not particularly fussy, and it adjusts very well to dry areas. Some of the varieties you should try include Beacon Silver and Herman’s Pride.
